Military Involvement in the Economy (MIITE) Dataset

Military Involvement in the Economy (MIITE) Dataset offers original time-series cross-national data on the initiation, existence, termination, and extent of military involvement in the economy in the form of running/owning for-profit enterprises. MIITE offers information about the emergence, termination, years of involvement, as well as detailed information on the individual enterprises that have been owned/run by the military for all countries with existing military and population above 500 thousand from 1950-2024. The final dataset finds information about the emergence of military involvement in the economy in 60 countries around the world, countries that have terminated military’s economic activities, and includes more than 3,300 firms and their activities from 1950-2024. The data captures the year a military in a given country has initiated economic activities and tracks the extent of economic involvement over time. This includes the name of the enterprises controlled by the military, the date they were established by or went under the control of the military, the date they were disbanded or were removed from the control of the military, the name of subsidieries and mother companies, the size of the enterprise, the sectors of the economy each enterprise is involved in, the extent of control of the military over the enterprise, the operational capacity of the enterprise, specific branch of the military in charge of the enterprise, and other information.
