Security Forces, Rights & Society (SFRS) Lab

Security Forces, Rights and Society Lab

The Security Forces, Rights & Society (SFRS) Lab is based at the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies at the University of Rhode Island. The lab trains students to collaborate on research examining the role of security forces in societies across the world.

The lab’s current flagship project is building the first comprehensive cross-national dataset (1970–2024) on military domestic roles that examines how armed forces around the world take on a variety of domestic responsibilities such as law enforcement, education, environmental management, public health, infrastructure development, and others.
